“PAUSTIK” – Building Community Resilience to Mitigate Malnutrition

Review Meeting cum Training was conducted at KROSS Resource Centre, Bengaluru on 7th & 8th December, 2017 for the field staff of BDDS, Ballari, SSDS, Kalburgi and BDSSS, Belagavi who are implementing the program in Northern Karnataka.

Mr. G. M. Varghese, Project Officer, PAUSTIK welcomed the Director, KROSS, the Resource Person, the participants and the KROSS Staff. In his address, he said that Malnutrition is a public health emergency in Karnataka as 50% of the people suffer in some form or the other which is a cause of deaths of children below the age of 5. Malnutrition can lead to permanent damage, impairment of physical growth and mental development. As per the National Family Health Survey III, in South India, Karnataka tops the list in Infant Mortality Rate, Maternal Mortality Rate and anaemia among children below 6 years of age. Therefore, we have to educate and create awareness in our operational area so that malnutrition is reduced.

Mr. Krishna Murthy, Communication Officer and Trainer, Directorate of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka conducted the training and provided inputs on symptoms of malnutrition, reasons and type of malnutrition, screening and management of Severely Acutely Malnourished Children.

On the 2nd day the participants presented their reports which were discussed and feedback provided for better implementation of the program.

Rev.Fr. Sebastian Fernandes, Director, KROSS guided the participants and inspired them on our role in eradicating malnutrition from our operational area so that the adolescents and children grow up to be well nourished citizens of tomorrow.
